Millions of toys have been recalled worldwide from major toy manufacturers such as Mattel/Fisher Price and Toys “R” Us for having excessive levels of lead in their paint.
The recalled toys range from SpongeBob SquarePants Notebooks to Barbie Accessories to Children’s Jewelry and more. Most of the recalled toys are Chinese-made and imported to the United States.
Lead is a highly toxic substance which can lead to a wide range of adverse health effects, such as brain and kidney damage, especially in children under the age of six. Lead poisoning symptoms include: constipation, coma, seizures, nausea and headaches.
The first of several toys recalled for excessive amounts of lead in the surface paint was announced by Mattel-Fisher Price on August 1, 2007. Included in the recall were 18 different toy favorites such as Elmo, Big Bird and Dora the Explorer. View a full list of recalled Fisher Price toys.
On August 22, 2007, 250,000 SpongeBob SquarePants address books and journals, manufactured by Martin Designs Inc. were recalled due to a lead poisoning hazard.
On August 30, 2007, Toys R Us recalled 27,000 Wooden Coloring Cases due to excessive levels of lead on the packaging and in some of the water colors included in the set.
