A New York jury recently awarded $1.5 million to two women who were injured in an elevator accident. On April 9, 1998, Marlene Prieto-Santana, 39, and Esther Maquishon, 75, were riding in the elevator of the Bronx Family Courthouse when it suddenly malfunctioned and dropped several floors before coming to an abrupt stop. Both women suffered knee injuries in the accident. Santana and Maquishon sued the city of New York alleging the elevator had a history of electrical and mechanical problems.
