Democrats Pass Historic Health Care Reform
The magic number came at 11:07 p.m. 218 votes for the Democrats' version of health care reform, the most sweeping since 1965.
The House broke out in cheers.
The vote included one Republican vote, a surprise since the GOP had been steadfastly opposed to the Democratic legislation.
Passage of the bill by the House is the first crucial step to overhauling health care.
The Senate hopes to act by the end of the year, and the two Houses would then craft a compromise that would need the approval of each chamber.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is planning to address the House soon. A late minute surprise- one Republican joined the Democrats - at 11:12 p.m. 220 votes including Republican. Joseph Cao, a new congressman from Louisiana reports C-Span. #
