Hundreds of workers at a West Virginia light-bulb factory have filed a class-action lawsuit against the plant's former and current owners alleging the companies knowingly exposed employees to mercury, arsenic, and other toxic chemicals. The suit accuses Philips Lighting Company, its parent Philips Electronics North America, and Viacom Inc. of fraud, negligence, infliction of emotional distress and wrongful death. The suit also names various West Virginia chemical suppliers. The workers are asking for punitive damages as well as compensation for lost wages, emotional distress and medical expenses. The lawsuit also demands the implementation of a special medical monitoring system for those at risk of developing leukemia and lung diseases in the future.
