Arkansas Personal Injury Updates

The latest injury updates from across Arkansas

Vinyl shower curtains sold at many major retail stores across the country have been linked to serious health problems because they emit toxic chemicals. Researchers at Center for Health, Environment, and Justice found that the curtains contained high concentrations of chemicals that are linked to liver damage as well as damage to the central nervous, respiratory, and reproductive systems.

Last week I blogged about the outbreak of Salmonella in several types of raw tomatoes. Today I was made aware of a recent update from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) attributing the number of illnesses attributed to Salmonella tainted tomatoes to be 228. Infections have been reported in at least twenty-three states since mid-April, with the last 61 cases found in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New York, Tennessee, and Vermont.

Elder abuse is often defined as a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person. In 2006 the United Nations designated June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) and each year an increasing number of events are held across the globe on this day to raise awareness of elder abuse, and highlight ways to challenge such abuse.

“Dry Drowning” is one more concern parents should have this summer as they take their children to swim. While it may sound impossible, the recent death of a 10 year old boy in South Carolina has doctors warning parents of such a danger.

The Food and Drug Administration released an alert earlier this week warning consumers in Mexico and Texas that a Salmonella outbreak may be related to the consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes. The bacteria, Salmonella serotype Saintpaul, is an uncommon type of Salmonella.

We all have ideas about how we might handle an emergency. And we're probably wrong. People who are leaders---or basket cases---in everyday life often won't behave that same way in a crisis. But we do know there are ways to become more resilient, and they don't all involve luck or prayer (although those are good too).

The last few months I have noticed a significant number of crane accidents around the nation. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration should really take the lead in this area to ensure training for crane operators coincides with changes in the industry as cranes become larger and the loads heavier. Currently about 80 workers die each year from crane related accidents, according to OSHA.
