Anvil is an insecticide used against adult mosquitoes in swamps, marshes, and recreational areas. Sumithrin, a synthetic pesticide, is its active ingredient. Anvil can also be used to kill pests in transport vehicles such as
aircraft,
ships,
railroad cars and
tractor trailers, and for institutional non-food use, use in homes and gardens, greenhouses and on pets.
A debate is raging on the toxicity of Anvil. Proponents of its use in the fight against the West Nile Virus (a disease spread by mosquitoes) claim that Anvil breaks down rapidly in the environment and poses little risk to humans when used in low concentrations. However, environmentalists and some health professionals express concern about Anvil's long-term effects on humans. Children and individuals suffering from
