Clarinex, also known as desloratadine, is an antihistamine used to treat symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis ("hay fever"), including sneezing, runny nose and red, itchy, tearing eyes, in patients 12 years of age and older. Also used to treat hives, Clarinex works by blocking histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. Clarinex comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day with or without food and is available by prescription only. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2001, Clarinex is made by Schering-Plough Corporation.

Side effects of Clarinex use include, but may not be limited to, pharyngitis (sore throat), dry mouth, extreme tiredness, headache, upset stomach and dizziness. In December 2002, the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products announced that Clarinex, sold in Europe as Aerius, should not be used during pregnancy because of possible links to a birth defect. According to the agency, a causal relationship may exist between Clarinex and a condition called hyospadias (an abnormality of the penis in which the urethra is out of place).
