Diethyl Phtalate is a chemical used in soaps,
cosmetics, and plastics. Exposure to Diethyl Phtalate may occur in a number of ways including, but not limited to, eating food out of plastic containers made with it or consuming contaminated
fish, shellfish, and drinking water. In addition, Diethyl Phtalate may be absorbed through the
skin or inhaled.
While there are no confirmed health hazards relating to Diethyl Phthalate, the substance is suspected of causing endocrine,
gastrointestinal,
nervous and
respiratory system problems.
The National Center for Environmental Health recently conducted a study that found alarmingly high levels of Diethyl Phthalate in human subjects. The study suggests that exposure to this chemical is higher than previously thought.
