Melanosis: Overview
Melanosis, also known as hyperpigmentation and hypermelanosis, occurs when areas of the
skin
turn abnormally dark. The body's overproduction of the skin pigment Melanin results in the abnormally dark color. Melanosis is sometimes caused by hormonal changes or exposure to different
medications
and may also occur in those suffering from diseases such as hemochromatosis and Addison's Disease. Melanosis can also be caused by exposure to the
arsenic
.
