A dozen residents of Prairie Grove, Arkansas filed a lawsuit in December 2003 against several leading poultry companies over a feed additive that contains arsenic. The suit accuses Tyson Foods Inc., Cargill Inc., Peterson Farms Inc., Cal-Maine Foods, George's Inc. and Simmons Foods Inc. of causing health problems among Prairie Grove residents by adding Roxarsone to its poultry litter.

Plaintiffs are seeking damages for illnesses, medical expenses, lost wages and emotional distress. The town's cancer rate is reportedly twice the national rate. Physicians have diagnosed several residents with serious disorders such as scleroderma and cystic fibrosis. Dust sample tests recently discovered high levels of arsenic in 28 of 30 area homes. The lawsuit is seeking an immediate halt to the use of Roxarsone in Prairie Grove.
