Sales of Shell and Texaco gasoline at hundreds of service stations across Florida and Louisiana were temporarily suspended in May 2004 after officials discovered high levels of sulfur at a distributing refinery. Gas station operators were forced to shut down regular and mid-grade pumps over Memorial Day weekend due to the contamination, which affected over 700 stations.

According to officials, the sulfur may corrode silver electrical contacts that make up an electrical system measuring the height of a float ball in the gas tank. This information is transmitted to the vehicle's dashboard fuel gauge. If the contacts become contaminated, the fuel gauge may show a full tank of gasoline when it is actually near empty. Installing a new system can reportedly reach the hundreds of dollars.

Officials believe the gasoline originated at Shell's Motiva Enterprises refinery in Norco, Louisiana.
